Detail

Ventilation (breathing) does not increase perfectly linearly with exercise intensity; there are two identifiable breakpoints, detected in the lab via gas analysis but approximable in the field:

  • First ventilatory threshold (VT1): the intensity at which ventilation begins to rise disproportionately (the body increases breathing to buffer rising lactate/CO2). It corresponds closely to the first lactate threshold (LT1) and to the point where the talk test becomes equivocal — speaking in full comfortable sentences gives way to slight difficulty (see talk-test). VT1 marks the top of easy/zone-2 work (see zone-2-training).
  • Second ventilatory threshold (VT2): a second, steeper rise in ventilation (respiratory compensation point) at higher intensity, corresponding closely to the second lactate threshold (LT2). At and above VT2, breathing is labored and continuous conversation is not possible; this is the upper bound of sustainable tempo/threshold work (see tempo-threshold-training).

Because they track the lactate thresholds (see lactate-threshold), VT1 and VT2 serve the same role as zone borders — but they have the practical advantage of being estimable without a blood sample, using breathing rate and the talk test. Both the talk test and RPE are valid field markers of the ventilatory (and respiratory compensation) thresholds.
