Zone 2 refers to training at an intensity just below the first lactate threshold (LT1) or first ventilatory threshold (VT1) — the point where the body begins producing lactate faster than it can easily clear it, and where breathing starts to ramp up. Expert consensus places the preferred zone-2 intensity right below LT1/VT1, often described as a blood-lactate concentration of roughly 1.5–2.0 mmol/L. LT1 is the boundary between light and moderate intensity and marks the upper limit of zone 2.
Practically, zone 2 is an easy, fully conversational pace you could sustain for a long time. In the common 5-zone heart-rate model it sits low (around 60–70% of HRmax for many people), but the only precise way to set it is by lactate testing, ventilatory testing, or careful breathing/talk-test cues — heart-rate percentages alone are approximate (see heart-rate-zones).
The appeal of zone 2 is adaptation efficiency: large volumes of below-threshold work strongly stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis, capillary density, and fat-oxidation capacity while generating little fatigue, so it can be done in high weekly volume. This is why polarized endurance programs spend most of their time in zone 1–2 (see training-intensity-distribution). It overlaps with liss and long-slow-distance but is defined more precisely by the LT1 anchor.
Note: zone 2 maximizes fat oxidation rate during the session, but as with all low- intensity work, total energy expenditure — not fuel mix — governs weight change (see fat-burning-intensity).
