Do people burn more fat with low-intensity training? It is true that a higher percentage of burned calories comes from fat when exercising at the low end of the intensity range (e.g. jogging at 65% of HRMax) than at moderate or high intensities.

Does this mean low-intensity exercise is best for fat loss? No. Consider the percentages:

  • At 60% to 65% of HRMax (low intensity): 50% of burned calories is fat (CHO contributes the other 50%; protein calories are minimal).
  • At 85% of HRMax (high intensity): 40% of burned calories is fat; 60% from CHO.
  • Note that at high-intensity training the % fat used is only 10% lower.
