Stretching is thought to stimulate the production and retention of gel-like substances called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). The GAGs, along with water and hyaluronic acid, lubricate connective tissue fibers, maintaining a critical distance between them. This prevents the fibers from touching one another and sticking together. As a result, excessive cross-linkages are not formed.
