From "Standards for Exercise Program Recommendation," section I.A (Warm-up: Aerobic / General):

Purpose: To increase circulation to the major muscle groups. The warm-up elevates muscle temperature, increases blood flow, and reduces the risk of injury.

Mode: May utilize a treadmill, bicycle, cross-country skiing, stair climbing equipment, or rowing ergometer.

Intensity: The activity should create enough cardiovascular stimulation to elevate the heart rate 20 to 30 beats above the resting rate.

  • a. On the bicycle, accomplished by pedalling at a constant 50 to 60 rpm.
  • b. On the treadmill, use a moderate speed (2 to 3.5 mph) at a 0% elevation for most individuals.
  • c. On the rowing ergometer, have the member row at a slow pace — 10 to 20 spm (strokes per minute).

Duration: The warm-up should last 5 to 10 minutes.
