In one line

The program standards and Alter (1996) rate eight stretches "X" (too advanced or dangerous for the average participant): Plough, Hurdler's Stretch, Deep Knee Bend/Lunge/Squat, Torso Twist, Straight-Leg Straddle Floor/Toe Touch, Straight-Leg Standing Floor/Toe Touch, Bridge, and Inversion.

Detail

The exercise program standards (p. 96) list the following under "Types of Stretches – 'X-Rated Exercises'":

  • a. Plough
  • b. Hurdler's Stretch
  • c. Deep Knee Bend / Lunge / Squat
  • d. Torso Twist
  • e. Straight-Leg Straddle and Floor/Toe Touch
  • f. Straight-Leg Standing Floor/Toe Touch
  • g. Bridge
  • h. Inversion

These are rated "X" because they are in all likelihood too advanced or dangerous for the average fitness participant just starting an exercise program (and perhaps for advanced athletes as well), even though many are an integral part of dance, gymnastics, martial arts, wrestling, and yoga (see stretching-controversy).

The detailed danger analysis for each of these stretches lives in the safety domain — see x-rated-exercises-overview. (Source pages for the per-stretch danger lists: 184 — Plough, Hurdler's Stretch, Deep Knee Bend/Lunge/Squat; 300 — Standing Torso Twist, Straight-Leg Straddle Floor/Toe Touch, Straight-Leg Standing Floor/Toe Touch; 396 — Bridge, Inversion.)
