Bulking is a structured muscle-gain phase, the counterpart to cutting (see cutting) in the bulk/cut cycle. The goal is to add muscle by supplying surplus energy and protein alongside progressive resistance training (see progressive-overload, muscle-hypertrophy).

Two common styles:

  • Lean bulk (recommended for most): a modest surplus of ~5–15% (~250–500 kcal/day), gaining roughly 0.25–0.5% body weight/week for non-beginners. This favors a high muscle : fat ratio and means less fat to strip later.
  • "Dirty" bulk: a large, loosely controlled surplus. It adds weight fast but a disproportionate share is fat, because muscle accretion is rate-limited — extra calories beyond what supports growth simply store as fat, lengthening the subsequent cut.

Practical guidance: keep protein at ~1.6–2.2 g/kg/day (see protein, muscle-gain-nutrition), eat enough carbohydrate to fuel hard training, and monitor weekly weight and waist, trimming the surplus if fat gain outpaces target.
