Detail

Muscular endurance is the ability to sustain repeated contractions against submaximal resistance. The prescription sits at the high-rep, low-intensity end of the rm-continuum.

Acute variables:

  • Reps: 15+ (commonly 15–25), at the muscular-endurance end of the continuum.
  • Intensity: light–moderate, ≤~67% 1RM (see intensity).
  • Sets: ~2–4 per exercise.
  • Rest: short — ~30–60 s or less (the short rest is the endurance stimulus; see rest-between-sets).
  • Frequency: 2–3+ days/week.

Structure: circuits are a natural fit — moving between stations with little rest trains local endurance and adds a cardiovascular element (see circuit-program). A sample circuit: lunge → push-up → lat-pulldown → bench-dip → plank → crunch, 2–4 rounds, 15–20 reps (or timed holds), minimal rest between stations.

Progression: add reps, add rounds, or shorten rest (increase density) before adding load — endurance progresses mostly by more work in less time.
