Recovery between sessions is about spacing training stress so each session lands on a recovered system rather than on top of unrepaired fatigue. It sits between the micro level (rest within a session) and the macro level (rest days, deloads).

General timeframes:

  • A muscle group trained hard typically needs ~48 hours before another heavy session; this drives split design and weekly frequency (see frequency, rest-between-workouts).
  • Recovery is faster when the session was lighter, the trainee is fitter, sleep/nutrition are good, and life stress is low.
  • Recovery is slower with very high volume/intensity, novel or eccentric-heavy work (which causes more soreness — see muscle-soreness), poor sleep, under-fueling, illness, or high life stress.

The repeated-bout effect: the first exposure to a new exercise causes the most soreness and damage; subsequent bouts of the same exercise cause progressively less, so recovery time shortens as you adapt to a movement.
