Detail

A deload is a scheduled reduction in training stress — usually one week — used to dissipate the fatigue that builds across a mesocycle. On GAS logic, it lets the resistance/supercompensation stage complete rather than driving toward exhaustion.

When to deload:

  • Scheduled — commonly every 4–8 weeks, e.g., the last microcycle of a mesocycle (the "1" in a 3:1 loading pattern).
  • Autoregulated — triggered by signs of accumulated fatigue: stalling/declining performance, persistent soreness or joint achiness, rising RPE at the same loads, poor sleep, low motivation, elevated resting HR (see readiness-recovery-scores).
