Acceleration training develops the leaning, horizontal-force "drive" phase; max-velocity training develops the upright, reactive top-speed phase — they need different drills, distances, and cues.
Because sprinting has two mechanically distinct phases, speed development trains them separately:
Acceleration training (developing the start/drive):
Maximum-velocity training (developing top speed):
Most field-sport athletes spend the majority of game time accelerating and decelerating over short distances, so acceleration and change-of-direction often get the greater emphasis, while track sprinters develop both extensively. Both are quality work: full recovery between maximal efforts (often ~1 min per 10 m sprinted, or work:rest ~1:>10) and placement early/fresh in the session. distance bands and recovery ratios vary by source.
