In ordinary resistance lifts, the bar is decelerated over the final portion of the range to stop it — which trains a braking pattern at exactly the moment power should peak. Ballistic training removes that deceleration: the athlete accelerates the load through the entire range and lets it leave the body (a thrown medicine ball, a released bar in a Smith-machine bench throw, or the body leaving the ground in a jump squat). This keeps the muscles producing force right to the end of the range and trains high power output.

Typical ballistic exercises: jump squats, bench-press throws (often in a Smith machine or with a measured device), and medicine-ball throws (chest pass, overhead, rotational, slams). Loads are usually light to moderate — frequently around the peak-power load (~30%-60% of 1RM, exercise-specific) — because the goal is maximal velocity and power, not maximal force. optimal loads vary by exercise and athlete.

Programming uses low reps (typically 1-6) with maximal intent on every rep, full recovery between sets (often 2-5 min), and placement early in the session while fresh. Ballistic work overlaps with plyometrics (jump squats are both) and complements Olympic-lift derivatives.
