Detail

Change of direction (COD) is the pre-planned ability to rapidly decelerate, reorient, and re-accelerate the body. Mechanically it is a sequence: deceleration → plant/redirection → re-acceleration.

Key mechanical features:

  • Deceleration: absorb momentum over several braking steps using eccentric quadriceps/glute/hamstring control; lower the center of mass (sink the hips) and widen the base to brake and prepare to redirect. Poor braking is the limiting factor in most COD.
  • Plant/redirection: the plant foot is placed slightly outside the body's line with the knee tracking over the toes (no valgus collapse); the trunk leans into the new direction; the hip/ankle generate the redirecting force. Steeper angle changes (e.g., 90°+) need more braking and a wider plant; shallow changes preserve more speed.
  • Re-acceleration: drive explosively out of the plant into the new direction (an acceleration pattern: lean, push, knee drive).

Important: COD performance correlates only moderately with straight-line speed — it is its own quality driven by eccentric/braking strength, technique, and reactive strength. Footwork strategies include the sidestep/cut (plant on the outside leg, push across) and the crossover (cross the trail leg over) depending on angle and speed.
