A fan-shaped hip abductor under the gluteus maximus, important for balance in walking.
The gluteus medius is a fan-shaped muscle that lies under the gluteus maximus. It performs an important function in maintaining balance in walking, and as the body ages it loses its effectiveness. Its anterior fibers are active in hip flexion and medial rotation, while its posterior fibers are involved in hip extension and lateral rotation. It is a hip abductor.
