Deceleration is the ability to reduce velocity in a controlled way, absorbing momentum through eccentric muscle action before stopping or changing direction. It is often the rate-limiting and most injury-relevant part of agility: an athlete can only safely change direction or stop as fast as they can brake, and poor braking mechanics (stiff knees, knee valgus, trunk too upright, COM too high) are linked to non-contact knee injuries (e.g., ACL).

Good deceleration mechanics:

  • Lower the center of mass by sinking the hips and bending the knees over several braking steps (don't stop on one stiff step where avoidable).
  • Widen the base and shorten/choppy the steps as you brake.
  • Absorb force eccentrically through the quads, glutes, and hamstrings, with the knee tracking over the toes (no valgus) and a forward-leaning braced trunk over the base.
  • For sharp redirections, the final braking step is the plant from which re-acceleration occurs.

Deceleration is trained deliberately: "stick"-and-hold landings/stops, deceleration drills (sprint to a controlled stop in a zone), and progressively faster approaches before adding redirection. Eccentric strength and reactive strength underpin it.
