Detail

Post-activation potentiation is an acute, transient enhancement of muscle force/power output following a high-intensity ("conditioning") voluntary contraction. After a heavy set, the muscle can — for a limited window — contract more forcefully and faster than its un-primed baseline. In applied settings the performance benefit is often called post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) to distinguish the measured performance boost from the underlying physiological PAP. PAP vs PAPE terminology distinction is recent and still debated.

Proposed mechanisms:

  • Phosphorylation of myosin regulatory light chains, making actin-myosin more sensitive to calcium.
  • Increased recruitment / higher-order motor-unit activation and reduced inhibition.
  • (For PAPE) raised muscle temperature and fluid/architecture changes from the conditioning activity.

The practical problem is that the conditioning contraction also causes fatigue, which competes with potentiation. Net performance depends on the balance: too little rest and fatigue wins; too much and potentiation fades. The usable window is commonly ~3-12 minutes, and it is highly individual — stronger, more trained athletes potentiate more and recover faster. PAP is the rationale behind complex-contrast-training and certain warm-up "primers."
