Detail

A shuttle run is a back-and-forth sprint between two (or more) lines/cones a set distance apart, turning at each end. It is a versatile drill: at short distances and low volume it develops linear COD (acceleration, sharp deceleration, the 180° turn, and re-acceleration); at longer total volumes it becomes an anaerobic conditioning drill. Common formats include the down-and-back (e.g., suicides / line drills touching progressively farther lines), fixed-distance shuttles (e.g., 5-yard, 10-yard, 20-yard repeats), and the beep/yo-yo shuttle used for aerobic-anaerobic testing.

Technique: sprint with good acceleration mechanics, decelerate over the last steps before the line (lower the COM, choppy steps), plant and pivot/turn with the knee over the toe (no valgus), touch the line if required, and re-accelerate. The turn is where time is won/lost and where injury risk concentrates.

As a drill, choose distance and rest by goal (short + full recovery for COD power; longer + short rest for conditioning). As a test, shuttle times/levels are compared to norms. It distinguishes from a linear sprint test by the braking/turning demand.
