The sequence of exercises in a workout — typically large to small muscle groups (structural → supplementary → body-part), with pre-exhaustion reversing this for advanced lifters.
The order of exercises affects the severity of the workout and should establish the basic framework for the session (Fleck & Kraemer, 1997). Two basic questions guide ordering:
A beginner should start with upper body to lower body and large muscle group to small muscle group. Exercise order should be evaluated based on the training level of the client.
The following programs demonstrate order variation:
Program A (note: pre-exhaustion — small muscle group trained before large muscle group; advanced routine)
| Exercise | Sets/reps |
|---|---|
| Single leg extension | 10 / 10 / 10 / 10 / 10 |
| Hamstring curl | 10 / 10 / 10 / 10 / 10 |
| Squats | 8 / 6 / 4 / 6 / 8 |
Program B (note: typical upper-to-lower body progression)
| Exercise | Sets/reps |
|---|---|
| Bench Press | 10 / 10 / 10 |
| Military Press | 10 / 10 / 10 |
| Leg Press | 10 / 10 / 10 |
| Standing calf raise | 10 / 10 / 10 |
