Detail

Most training systems are variations of the multiple-set system. This system can be performed at any desired resistance, for any number of repetitions and sets, to meet the objective of a training program.

For structural exercises (multi-joint), a 5 to 6 RM performed for a minimum of 3 sets seems to be the optimal resistance and number of repetitions to cause maximal increases in strength (Fleck & Kraemer, 1997).

Periodized programs using multiple sets appear superior to using the same multiple-set system for the entire training period for developing strength and power (Willoughby, 1993). If the user fails to change training variables for a long period, plateaus in strength and power gains will result (Fleck & Kraemer, 1997).
