No single body metric tells the whole story — combine weight trend, girths, body-fat estimate, and photos to read composition change correctly.
Body change has two components — fat mass and lean mass — and bodyweight alone can't separate them. Four complementary metrics together give a reliable picture:

The classic case for using all four is recomposition: a trainee loses fat and gains muscle, so the scale barely moves while the waist shrinks, arms grow, and photos clearly improve. Reading only the scale would wrongly conclude "no progress."
Guidance for the data layer: store each metric with date and conditions, smooth each one, and present them side by side so a stalled scale is interpreted against girth/photo/fat trends rather than in isolation. See measurement-frequency for how often to capture each.
