A hard set is a working set taken reasonably close to failure (roughly RIR 0–3 — see rpe-rir-logging). Counting hard sets per muscle group per week has become a popular volume-dose unit because it is simpler to prescribe and track than raw training-volume-load, and it maps well to hypertrophy dose-response research.

Practical guidance commonly cited:

  • Roughly ~10 sets per muscle per week is a reasonable starting target for growth, with many people benefiting from 10–20+ as they progress.
