Detail

Volume load (VL) for a set is reps × load; for an exercise or session it is the sum across sets — i.e. sets × reps × load when sets are uniform. Example: 4 sets × 8 reps × 100 kg = 3,200 kg of volume load.

VL is the standard way to quantify how much work a muscle or movement received, and it is the metric you trend to confirm progressive-overload is actually happening. Adding load, adding reps at the same load, or adding a set all raise VL — so it captures progress that a 1RM check alone would miss.

Practical handling:

  • Trend it weekly per muscle group or per movement, not just per session, because weekly volume is the dose most tied to hypertrophy (see kpis-hypertrophy).
  • Compare like exercises. Total-body VL across squats and curls is not very meaningful because absolute loads differ wildly; per-exercise or per-muscle VL is.
  • VL ignores effort. The same VL at RIR 4 vs RIR 0 are different stimuli, so pair VL with RPE/RIR (see rpe-rir-logging).
  • For hypertrophy programming, many practitioners prefer counting hard sets per muscle per week (see hard-sets-counting) as a simpler dose unit than raw VL.
