What to Log for Strength Training

In one line

For every resistance set, capture the exercise, the load, reps completed, and effort — these four fields make a strength log analyzable.

Detail

A useful strength log records each working set as a row containing, at minimum: the exercise, the load (weight lifted, in kg or lb), the repetitions completed, and an effort marker (RPE or RIR — see rpe-rir-logging). Warm-up sets can be noted but are usually excluded from working-volume math.

From those raw fields, every higher-order strength metric is derived:

  • Volume load = sets × reps × load (see training-volume-load) — the single most useful progress driver to trend over weeks.
  • Tonnage = total weight moved in a session (see tonnage).
  • Estimated 1RM from a load×reps set (see estimated-1rm-trend) — lets you compare a heavy triple to a set of ten on the same scale.
  • Personal records (see personal-records) — flagged automatically when a load, rep, or estimated-1RM ceiling is beaten.

Recommended additional fields: rest taken between sets (see rest-taken), tempo if prescribed, and a free-text note (pain, form breakdown, equipment, distraction). Logging sets to failure or near-failure matters because two "3×10" sessions at the same load are not equivalent if one stopped at RIR 3 and the other at RIR 0.

Log at the set granularity, not the session, so the data layer can roll up to session, exercise, muscle group, week, and mesocycle. Per-set logging is what enables auto-regulation and volume-progression rules downstream (see progressive-overload-application, volume-progression-tracking).
