Detail

The point of tracking is decision-making. A metric should trigger a program change only when it meets a few conditions, in order:

  1. The change is real, not noise. It must be a sustained move in the smoothed trend over a sufficient window (~2–3 weeks for body weight/strength), not a single reading (see trend-vs-noise).
  2. Adherence was actually there. First rule out the boring cause: a stalled outcome with poor adherence is an adherence problem, not a program problem — fix consistency before changing the plan.
  3. It misses the target rate. The trend is off the target rate of change in a way that matters.

Typical trigger → action patterns:

  • Fat-loss trend flat ≥2–3 weeks (with good adherence) → cut intake or add activity (see rate-of-change-targets).
  • Strength/volume trend flat across a block → deload, then change exercise/volume/ technique (see volume-progression-tracking, deload-weeks).
  • Low HRV / high RHR / poor readiness for several days, or rising soreness → reduce today's intensity (auto-regulate) or insert a recovery day (see readiness-recovery-scores, autoregulation-rpe-rir).
  • Sustained readiness decline + falling performance → overreaching; back off load systematically (see overtraining-overreaching).

The general rule: acute signals (one bad readiness day) adjust today's session; chronic trends (weeks off-target) adjust the program. Don't make a structural program change off a single day, and don't ignore weeks of off-target trend hoping it self-corrects.
