Two complementary approaches to recovery:

  • Passive recovery — complete rest: stopping activity entirely, sitting, lying down, sleeping. Appropriate when fatigued, ill, injured, or genuinely needing to do nothing.
  • Active recoverylight, low-intensity movement at an easy effort (e.g., easy walk, light cycling, swimming, gentle mobility or yoga). The aim is to promote blood flow to working tissues, keep joints moving, and maintain the training habit without adding meaningful fatigue.

Two contexts:

  1. Between efforts (within a session): in interval/conditioning work, light movement during rest periods clears metabolic by-products and sustains performance better than standing still for some athletes (see recovery-cardio, rest-between-workouts).
  2. Active recovery days: a low-intensity session on an off-day (a "recovery day") keeps you moving and may ease the feeling of soreness via blood flow, while staying well below the threshold that would impede recovery.

Honest evidence note: active recovery reliably helps clear blood lactate after hard efforts and can reduce the perception of soreness/stiffness, but it does not strongly accelerate the repair of muscle damage or reduce DOMS magnitude much (see muscle-soreness). The choice isn't either/or — heavily fatigued athletes may need passive rest, while lightly fatigued ones often feel better with gentle activity.
