Allostasis is the body's ability to maintain stability through change — adjusting hormones, heart rate, and metabolism to meet demands. Allostatic load is the cost of that process when it's overused: the cumulative biological burden from a stress system that stays activated too often, too long, or fails to shut off properly.

Unlike a single cortisol or blood-pressure reading, allostatic load is a multi-system concept — it captures dysregulation across, for example: chronically elevated or blunted cortisol, creeping blood pressure, rising inflammatory markers (e.g., CRP), worsening metabolic markers (glucose, lipids), all accumulating quietly over time. The result is faster biological wear and higher risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, depression, and impaired immunity.

Relevance to fitness:

  • Training adds to the total load. A workout is a stressor; on top of high life stress, the combined load is what the body must recover from (see stress-recovery-interaction).
  • Overtraining is essentially allostatic overload from the training side — too much stimulus, too little recovery (see overtraining-overreaching).
  • Moderate exercise lowers allostatic load over time (better cardiovascular, metabolic, and stress-regulation markers), while excessive, under-recovered training raises it. The dose makes the difference (see exercise-as-stressor).
