Stress is the body's response to a demand or threat. Whether it helps or harms depends largely on how long it lasts.

  • Acute stress is short-lived and adaptive. A stressor triggers the sympathetic "fight-or-flight" response (adrenaline, then cortisol): heart rate and blood pressure rise, fuel is mobilized, focus sharpens. When the stressor passes, the system returns to baseline. Exercise itself is a beneficial acute stressor (see exercise-as-stressor).
  • Chronic stress is prolonged or repeated activation without adequate recovery — ongoing work, relationship, financial, or sleep stress. The stress response stays partly "on," cortisol regulation becomes disturbed, and the cumulative wear is captured by the concept of allostatic load (see allostatic-load).

Why it matters for fitness:

  • Chronic stress competes for the same recovery budget as training — high life stress slows recovery and adaptation and pushes toward under-recovery (see stress-recovery-interaction).
  • It impairs sleep, appetite regulation, mood, and immune function.
  • The healthy pattern is acute stress + full recovery (hormesis: a challenge you bounce back from, stronger). The harmful pattern is stress without recovery.

The goal isn't to eliminate stress (impossible and undesirable) but to ensure stressors are followed by genuine recovery, and to manage chronic load (see stress-management).
