Caffeine is the most-used stimulant and a legitimate performance aid (see caffeine), but it directly antagonizes sleep. It works by blocking adenosine receptors — adenosine is the molecule that builds up across the day and creates sleep pressure. Blocking it masks fatigue without removing the underlying need for sleep.

The problem for sleep is timing and half-life:

  • Caffeine's half-life is roughly 5–6 hours (highly variable by genetics, liver enzymes, pregnancy, medications). So a 2 p.m. dose can leave a meaningful fraction in the system at bedtime.
  • Even when caffeine doesn't prevent falling asleep, it can reduce deep sleep and total sleep time and fragment sleep, lowering quality.
  • A common practical rule: avoid caffeine within ~6–8 hours of bedtime (and sensitive people, even earlier/less).

General intake guidance: up to ~400 mg/day of caffeine is considered moderate for most healthy adults; pregnant people are usually advised to limit to ~200 mg/day.
