A night of sleep cycles through light NREM, deep slow-wave NREM, and REM about every 90 minutes; deep sleep dominates early cycles (physical repair) and REM dominates later ones (memory/emotion).
Sleep is not uniform. It moves through distinct stages grouped into NREM (non-rapid-eye- movement) and REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep:

A full cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes and repeats 4–6 times per night. The mix shifts across the night: deep (N3) sleep is concentrated in the first half, while REM lengthens in the second half toward morning. This is why cutting sleep short (waking early) costs disproportionately more REM, and why going to bed late costs deep sleep.
For most adults, deep sleep is roughly 1.5–2 hours total, and REM is about 20–25% of total sleep. Both matter for fitness: N3 for physical repair and hormone release (see sleep-and-muscle-growth), REM for skill/motor learning and mood.
Sleep timing is governed by the circadian rhythm and sleep pressure (see circadian-rhythm); fragmented or mistimed sleep degrades architecture even when total hours look adequate.
