How to do the Banded Deadlift

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Band anchored underfoot, held at hip height in both hands, hips set as in a conventional deadlift starting position.

  1. Pull the same way as a conventional deadlift -- hips and shoulders rising together, bar (band handle) close to the body.

  2. Expect resistance to build sharply near lockout, the opposite feel of a loaded barbell pull.

  3. Control the descent -- the band will pull back hard, so lower it deliberately rather than letting it snap you down.

Common mistakes

  • Losing control on the way down and letting the band yank the hips into the bottom position too fast.

  • Expecting the same "hardest off the floor" feel as a barbell pull, which isn't how a band's resistance curve works.
