How to do the Barbell Good Morning

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Bar racked across your upper back (like a squat), feet shoulder-width, a slight bend in your knees.

  1. Hinge forward at your hips, keeping your back flat and the bar path close to your body, until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor or as far as your hamstring flexibility allows.

  2. Drive your hips forward to return to standing.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the lower back to reach more depth instead of keeping it flat and stopping where your hamstrings limit you.

  • Bending the knees too much, turning the movement into a squat instead of a hip hinge.
