How to do the Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand at your thighs.

  1. Push your hips back, keeping the dumbbells close to your legs as they slide down.

  2. Keep a soft, constant knee bend -- same hip-hinge pattern as the barbell version.

  3. Lower to your real hamstring-stretch limit, then drive the hips forward to stand.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the dumbbells drift forward away from the legs, which adds lower-back strain without adding hamstring benefit.

  • Rounding the back to reach further down instead of stopping at a real flexibility limit.
