How to do the Cable Crunch

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Kneeling facing a high pulley, rope handle held at either side of your head, hips stacked over your knees.

  1. Flex your spine, curling your elbows down toward your hips/thighs -- keep your hips still, this is a spinal-flexion movement, not a hip-hinge.

  2. Squeeze at the bottom, then return under control to a full stretch.

Common mistakes

  • Hinging at the hips instead of flexing the spine -- this turns the crunch into a good-morning-style movement and takes tension off the abs.

  • Using your arms to pull the rope down instead of curling with your trunk.

How the knowledge graph models this movement

Each joint action, with the role and emphasis the graph assigns each muscle. These are qualitative anatomical labels, not measured muscle activation.

  • Spine flexionprimary action

Rectus abdominis (prime mover, high emphasis); External oblique (synergist, moderate emphasis); Internal oblique (synergist, moderate emphasis)
