How to do the Side Bend

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Stand holding a dumbbell in one hand at your side (or a cable at the same side), other hand resting on your hip or head.

  1. Bend directly to the side, lowering the weight down your leg, keeping your torso from twisting forward or backward.

  2. Return to upright by contracting your obliques on the working side, then continue past vertical only as far as feels controlled on the opposite side if performing a full range.

Common mistakes

  • Twisting the torso forward or backward instead of bending in a pure side-to-side plane.

  • Using momentum/swinging the weight instead of a controlled, muscle-driven bend.
