How to do the Russian Twist
Setup
Seated, knees bent, leaning back slightly with a straight (not rounded) spine, holding a weight (plate, dumbbell, or medicine ball) at your chest.
Rotate your torso to tap the weight on the floor beside one hip, then rotate to the other side.
Keep the rotation controlled rather than fast and flinging -- lumbar rotation range is limited, so a big ballistic twist stresses the spine more than it builds oblique strength.
Keep your chest up and spine straight throughout -- don't let your back round as you fatigue.
Common mistakes
Rounding the lower back to chase more range, instead of keeping a straight spine and rotating from the trunk.
Whipping through the reps with momentum instead of a controlled, deliberate rotation on each side.
