How to do the Sit-Up

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat (anchored if needed), hands lightly at your chest or temples.

  1. Curl up through a controlled range -- the less you rise, the less your hip flexors take over and the less force goes into your lower back.

  2. Lower back down under control rather than dropping.

Common mistakes

  • Rising too far upright, which shifts the work from your abs to your hip flexors and loads your lumbar spine more than intended.

  • Yanking on your neck with your hands instead of curling from your trunk.
