How to do the Side-Lying Hip Abduction

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Lie on your side, legs stacked and straight, resting on your forearm or a flat hand for support.

  1. Keeping your top leg straight, raise it up toward the ceiling against gravity (or an ankle weight) -- the straight-knee position engages the two-joint hip muscles more than a bent-knee version.

  2. Lower under control back down, stopping just before your legs touch.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling your hips backward to use momentum/body English instead of a pure hip abduction with the torso stacked and still.

  • Letting the leg drift forward (into hip flexion) instead of raising it straight out to the side.
