How to do the Squat Jump

Cues reviewed by Kwabena Osei on

Setup

Feet about shoulder-width apart, chest up.

  1. Descend to roughly a parallel/half-squat with your back neutral, then drive explosively through your whole foot, fully extending your ankles, knees, and hips as you jump.

  2. Swing your arms up to help drive the jump.

  3. Land softly back into the squat position with your knees tracking over your toes -- never letting them cave inward.

Common mistakes

  • Landing with stiff, locked knees instead of absorbing through a soft landing into the next squat.

  • Letting the knees collapse inward (valgus) on landing -- the single biggest jump-related injury risk to eliminate.
