The antigravity musculature contains most of the large muscles in the body and is of major importance because our muscles must resist the pull of gravity to maintain an erect posture. Their strength and flexibility largely determine whether proper alignment is maintained in the trunk and hip. The downward pressure of gravity tends to cause the skeleton to buckle at three principal points — the ankle, knee, and hip — and because body weight is largely in front of the spinal column, the body tends to fall forward.
To counteract these tendencies toward buckling, a minimum of five muscles or muscle groups must be activated: the soleus and gastrocnemius at the ankle, the quadriceps femoris at the knee, and the gluteus maximus at the hip. The trunk is held upright by the erector spinae running from the sacrum to the base of the skull; a fifth group, the abdominals, serves as reflex antigravity muscles by maintaining the proper relationship between the rib cage and pelvis in front.
