The primary function of the hip-joint musculature is to support the weight of the head, arms, and trunk both in static erect posture and in dynamic postures. The ranges of motion for the hip joint are:

  • Hip flexion — 90 degrees with the knee extended; 120 degrees (up to 135) with the knee flexed (in this flexed-knee position, tension in the hamstrings is released).
  • Hip hyperextension — 10 to 30 degrees. (The Joint ROM chart lists hip hyperextension as 10–15°, with a handwritten "– 25.")
  • Hip adduction — 30 degrees (limited by the tensor fascia lata and iliotibial band).
