Rotation of the forearm that turns the palm up, rotating the radius on the ulna.

Detail

Supination is rotation on the axis of bone, specifically applied to the forearm, as in turning the hand up by rotating the radius on the ulna. At the end of the movement the palms should face you. It is a function of the biceps brachii and the brachioradialis. Source attributes the movement terminology to Thompson (1989); the radioulnar joint movement diagram is from Harter (1991).

Key facts

  • Supination = forearm rotation turning the palm up (radius rotates on the ulna).
  • End position: palms face you.
  • Produced by the biceps brachii and brachioradialis.

Connections

  • pronation — the opposite forearm rotation.
  • biceps-brachii — supinates the forearm.
  • brachioradialis — supinates the forearm.
