In one line

A hip flexor that also abducts and medially rotates the femur, inserting via the iliotibial (IT) band.

Detail

The tensor fascia lata's muscle fibers extend about one-quarter of the way down the lateral side of the thigh before inserting into the iliotibial (IT) band. It is involved in hip flexion, abduction, and medial rotation of the femur. The IT band assists in reducing tensile stresses in the femur imposed by weight-bearing forces. Functionally, the tensor fascia lata and IT band are expendable. The tensor fascia lata and IT band also limit hip adduction (ROM 30°).

Key facts

  • Fibers run ~¼ down the lateral thigh, inserting into the iliotibial (IT) band.
  • Functions: hip flexion, abduction, medial rotation of the femur.
  • IT band reduces tensile stress in the femur from weight-bearing.
  • Tensor fascia lata & IT band limit hip adduction to 30°; functionally expendable.

Connections

  • hip-flexors — a primary hip flexor.
  • hip-joint-rom — limits hip adduction.
  • internal-rotation — medial rotation of the femur.
