Weight in kg divided by height in metres squared — a fast population screen for weight status that says nothing about body fat distribution and mislabels muscular people.
BMI = body mass (kg) ÷ height (m)² (or 703 × lb ÷ in²). It is a cheap, universal screening index for weight status at the population level.
WHO adult categories:

Limits (important): BMI does not measure body fat and cannot distinguish fat from muscle or bone — muscular athletes are frequently misclassified as "overweight/obese," while "normal-weight obesity" (high fat, low muscle) is missed. It ignores fat distribution (visceral vs. peripheral), and cutoffs differ by ethnicity (e.g., lower obesity thresholds recommended for some Asian populations).
