Two maximal-effort distance-running field tests — run 1.5 miles as fast as possible, or cover as much ground as possible in 12 minutes — converted to estimated VO2max by regression equations.
Both are maximal field tests: motivated, apparently healthy participants give a near-all-out effort over a measured course (track or flat path). They correlate well with directly measured VO2max in fit people (Cooper reported r ≈ 0.90 vs. lab VO2max in Air Force personnel) but require near-maximal exertion — screen first (preparticipation-screening-overview) and not for the unfit/high-risk.
1.5-mile (2.4-km) run test — record the time to complete 1.5 miles (6 laps of a 400-m track).
Cooper 12-minute run test — record the distance covered in 12 minutes.
Administration tips: warm up; pace evenly (beginners tend to start too fast); allow walking only if necessary; record to the nearest second/measured distance. The 1.5-mile run is favored by military/law-enforcement; the 12-min run is convenient when timing one fixed period.
