Detail

Because direct VO2max testing needs a metabolic cart and a maximal effort, most fitness settings estimate it. Three families of indirect methods:

  1. Submaximal HR-prediction tests — exploit the near-linear HR–workload relationship: measure HR at known submaximal workloads and extrapolate to age-predicted HRmax. Examples: YMCA cycle test, Åstrand-Ryhming. Lower risk; assumes a standard HRmax and steady-state HR.
  2. Maximal field tests — performance over a fixed time/distance maps to VO2max via regression equations: 1.5-mile run & Cooper 12-min run, 20-m shuttle/beep test. Higher accuracy in motivated, fit people; require near-max effort.
  3. Walk and step tests — lower-intensity options for less fit or older adults: Rockport 1-mile walk, step tests.

Accuracy hierarchy (approx.): direct > maximal field tests (r ≈ 0.90 in fit subjects) > submaximal cycle/step tests (SEE often ±10–15%). All estimates inherit error from the assumed HRmax (in submaximal tests) and from economy/motivation (in field tests). Choose the method by the client's fitness, risk, available equipment, and need for precision; re-test with the same method for valid change tracking.
