When direct gas analysis isn't available, VO2max is estimated from submaximal HR responses, maximal field-test performance, or step-test recovery — trading accuracy for practicality.
Because direct VO2max testing needs a metabolic cart and a maximal effort, most fitness settings estimate it. Three families of indirect methods:
Accuracy hierarchy (approx.): direct > maximal field tests (r ≈ 0.90 in fit subjects) > submaximal cycle/step tests (SEE often ±10–15%). All estimates inherit error from the assumed HRmax (in submaximal tests) and from economy/motivation (in field tests). Choose the method by the client's fitness, risk, available equipment, and need for precision; re-test with the same method for valid change tracking.
