Run back and forth over 20 m in time with audio beeps that speed up each minute; the level you reach before falling behind maps to estimated VO2max — the standard team-sport aerobic field test.
The 20-m multistage shuttle run (Léger & Lambert, 1982; also "beep test," "bleep test," "MSFT," and the PACER in youth fitness batteries) is an incremental, maximal field test. Participants run between two lines 20 m apart, turning to meet a recorded beep. Speed starts at ~8.5 km/h and increases ~0.5 km/h each level (≈1 min). The test ends when the participant fails to reach the line in time on two consecutive shuttles. The final level and shuttle are the score and convert to estimated VO2max.
Estimation: original Léger regression and several alternatives exist (Ramsbottom et al. 1988 published a widely used level→VO2max table). A simplified Flouris et al. (2005) equation: VO2max ≈ 3.46 × (level + shuttle/(level × 0.4325 + 7.0048)) + 12.2. (multiple validated equations exist; results differ by ~several mL/kg/min)
Correlation with lab VO2max is high in fit young adults (r ≈ 0.92). It is maximal and involves repeated decelerations/turns, so screen first, use a non-slip surface, and it is well-suited to groups and field-sport athletes; pacing is dictated by the audio, removing pacing skill as a confounder.
