Raw 1RM means little without context — strength norms express it relative to body weight (e.g., bench-press ratio) by age and sex, sorting results from poor to excellent.
Because heavier people generally lift more, strength is normed relative to body mass. ACSM publishes age- and sex-specific norms for common lifts expressed as a strength ratio = weight lifted (1RM) ÷ body weight, most often for the bench press (upper body) and leg press (lower body), plus handgrip in kg.

Women's bench ratios run roughly 0.3–0.5 lower at each age; leg-press ratios are higher than bench for both sexes. The categories typically span well below average → well above average / superior.
Use: report the category, not just the number; compare like-for-like (same lift, same equipment); and re-test the same way. For older adults and clinical contexts, grip strength norms and sarcopenia cutoffs (see grip-strength-test) are often more relevant than barbell ratios.
