A raw test number is only useful once interpreted. Two reference frames:

  • Norm-referenced — compare to age/sex population data → a percentile or category (poor → excellent). Tells the client where they stand among peers.
  • Criterion-referenced — compare to a health/performance threshold (e.g., waist <102/88 cm, VO2max ≥ the level for functional independence) → meets the standard or not, independent of percentile.

Interpretation workflow:

  1. Confirm validity — correct protocol, conditions, and effort? Discard contaminated trials.
  2. Compare to norms and/or criteria using the table matched to the exact protocol.
  3. Identify strengths and limiters across components (e.g., good cardio, weak core, tight hamstrings).
  4. Set priorities linked to the client's goals (program-design-process).
  5. Communicate constructively — emphasize trends and controllables; avoid shaming on body-comp numbers (motivation-types); flag any health red flags for referral.

Cautions: match the norm table to the exact protocol/method; never compare a DEXA %fat to a BIA %fat, or a modified to a full push-up. Single scores carry measurement error — interpret a pattern, and weigh change over time (tracking-change) more than one snapshot.
