Detail

The one-repetition maximum (1RM) is the gold-standard field measure of maximal dynamic strength for a given exercise (commonly back squat, bench press, deadlift, leg press). It requires sound technique, a thorough warm-up, and (for free weights) competent spotting (spotting).

NSCA 1RM protocol:

  1. Warm up with light cardio, then 5–10 reps at ~40–60% of estimated 1RM.
  2. Rest ~1 min; light dynamic prep.
  3. 3–5 reps at ~60–80% of estimated 1RM.
  4. Rest 2–4 min. Add load to a weight thought to allow ~1 rep:
    • upper body +5–10% / +10–20 lb, lower body +10–20% / +30–40 lb.
  5. Attempt 1 rep. If successful, rest 2–4 min and increase load again; if failed, rest and decrease by the increments above.
  6. Find the true 1RM ideally within 3–5 attempts to avoid fatigue confounding the result.

Cautions: maximal loading is contraindicated for many beginners, novices with poor technique, and certain populations; estimated 1RM from submaximal reps is often safer (estimated-1rm). Keep technique strict — partial reps inflate the number (rom-not-weight-distance). Test the same exercise/equipment for valid re-tests.
