The ability to combine movements of several body parts smoothly, accurately, and in the right sequence and timing — the quality that makes a complex motion look effortless.
Coordination is the capacity to execute smooth, accurate, controlled movements that require the correct sequencing and timing of multiple muscles and joints. It is a core element of neuromotor fitness (see neuromotor-fitness) and an output of motor control (see motor-control).
Common sub-categories:
Coordination is distinct from balance (postural control) and from agility (reactive-agility, which adds speed and direction change), though all three overlap and are trained together. It is highly task-specific and improves chiefly through practice of the specific pattern. Tasks that demand inter-limb coordination while maintaining balance (contralateral reaching, marching on an unstable surface, dynamic-balance drills; see dynamic-balance-drills) train balance and coordination simultaneously.
